Church of Our Lady of Lagoa

The primitive Gothic church was built in the second half of the 13th century, being its oldest reference from the time of King D. Dinis.

Due to the Black Death that devastated the region, the original church disappeared during the reign of King João I, giving rise to the construction of a new parish church, as the building's small dimensions did not allow for the burial of the local population.

The construction of the current parish church, under the responsibility of the architect Pêro Gomes, dates back to the 16th century, based on the Renaissance style, with three naves supported by four Tuscan columns, where regional schist predominates.

The pediment is decorated with a panel of tiles and topped by a Cross of the Order of Christ, representative of Our Lady of Conception. The main altar, composed of gilded wood carvings, displays two wooden sculptures representing Saint Augustine and Saint Monica. Its interior is decorated with artistic decorations from the 17th and 18th centuries and eight side chapels.

It is essential to highlight the tomb of Gomes Martins Silvestre, first mayor and settler of Monsaraz, built in marble from Estremoz, whose front face shows a funeral procession where various figures parade and at the top a figure alluding to the activity of the Knight Templar.
